Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels hit his 1st career home run on July 21st, 2012 off Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants. Oddly enough, when Cain hit a homer off Hamels in the top of the same inning, it was the first homer Hamels had given up to an opposing pitcher. It’s also the only time for either club that starting pitchers hit homers off each other in the same inning.

On This Date… July 17th, 1984, Phillies Hall of Famer Steve Carlton throws his 4th KO of the game and tosses himself into the record books. The KO is his 100th of the season giving Lefty 18 consecutive 100+-KO seasons, setting the NL record and tying the MLB record held by Walter Johnson.
July 17th, 1992, the Phillies score 3 runs in the 6th inning of a game vs Los Angeles Dodgers. The Phillies score the 3 runs and send 9 batters to the plate without managing a single hit. The Dodgers were charged with 3 walks and 3 errors in the inning.

On this date… The Phillies lose their 10,000th game, the most losses in professional sports, on July 15th, 2007. The Phillies were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 10-2 before a Citizen’s Bank Park crowd of 44,872 and a National TV audience. Adam Eaton took the loss. During the game, Phillies CF Michael Bourn hit his 1st and only HR as a member of the Phillies. Winning a World Series 15 months later helped soften the blow.

Flyers Hall of Famer Bill Barber was born on this date, July 11th, in 1952 in Callander, Ontario. Barber is the all-time goals scored leader for the Flyers and won two Stanley Cups with the team. Did you know Barber has his name on the Stanley Cup a third time? He was the Director of Player Personnel for the Tampa Bay Lightning when they won the Cup in 2004. And did you know Barber’s nickname was Arnie because he was a lousy golfer? Happy 66th Birthday, Arnie!

On July 8th, 1952, the Phillies hosted their 1st MLB All Star game. The NL defeated the AL 3-2 in 5 innings. It’s the only MLB All Star game in league history to end early due to rain.
On July 8th, 2011, Phillies pitcher Juan Perez threw an immaculate inning (3 KOs on 9 pitches) in the 10th inning of a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves. Perez was the first pitcher in MLB history to throw an immaculate inning in his 1st MLB win.
