On This Date…

On May 14th, 2010 the Flyers finished the near-impossible feat of winning a seven game series after being down 3 games to 0.  The Flyers lost the first three games to the Boston Bruins and were down 3-0 in game 4.  A well-timed timeout by Flyers coach Peter Laviolette got the Flyers focused on getting the next goal. The Flyers came back to win the game 5-4 in overtime and took the next three games, winning the series in 7.

On This Date…

On May 13th, 1975, Flyers Rick MacLeish scored a hat trick and the Flyers defeated the New York Islanders 4-1 in game 7 of their Stanley Cup semi-finals series. The win put the Flyers in their second consecutive Stanley Cup Final, a series with the French Connection-led Buffalo Sabres.

On This Date…

On May 11th, 2006, vs New York Mets, Phillies outfielder #33 Aaron Rowand made a stunning over the shoulder catch before crashing into the outfield fence and damaging his face. Rowand broke his nose, cheekbone and orbital bone. He also required 15 stitches. After surgery and 15 days on the DL, Rowand returned to the line-up and was given two standing ovations.

On This Date…

On May 8th, 1980 the Flyers defeated the Minnesota North Stars 7-3 to win their conference final series 4 games to 1.  Flyers Bill Barber scored 9 goals in the series, including 4 goals in game 3. The win sent the Flyers to their 4th Stanley Cup Finals appearance.

On This Date…

On May 6th, 1976, Flyers winger Reggie Leach scored an NHL-record 5 goals against the Boston Bruins in a playoff game giving the Flyers a 6-3 win, closing out the Bruins 4 games to 1, and sending the Flyers to their 3rd consecutive Stanley Cup Final.

On May 6th, 2011, Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee struck out 16 batters vs. Atlanta Braves but lost 5-0.

On May 6th, 1976, the Flyers defeated the Boston Bruins 6-3 in game 5, winning the conference final 4 games to 1.  Flyers Reg Leach had an NHL record 5 goals in the series clincher, and 9 goals during the 5-game series. The win sent the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third consecutive season.

On May 5th, 2000 Flyers captain Keith Primeau scored 12:01 into the 5th overtime period (152:01) beating Penguins goaltender Ron Tugnutt with a wicked wrister to end the 3rd longest NHL playoff game and the longest since the 1930s.

On This Date…

 On May 5th, 1974, the Flyers defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 in game 7 of the semi-finals. Gary Dornhoefer scored twice in the game and Dave Schultz pummeled Rangers Dale Rolfe, leaving him bloodied. Rolfe was the Ranger whose shot from the point three games earlier hit Flyers Barry Ashbee in the eye and ended his career.   The game 7 win gave the Flyers their 1st conference championship, and set the stage for the Stanley Cup Finals pitting the Broad Street Bullies against the Big Bad Bruins.
