On June 5th, 1977 the Sixers fell to the Portland Trail Blazers 109-107 in game 6 of their NBA Finals series. The Sixers were up 2 games to 0 before losing the next four in a row. It was the Sixers’ 5th NBA Finals appearance in franchise history.

On June 5th, 1967 the NHL officially expanded from 6 to 12 teams adding the Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, California Seals, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Star and St. Louis Blues to begin play in October.

On This Date…

On June 1st, 1986, the Phillies defeated the San Diego Padres 16-5 at the Vet. Steve Carlton gave up 5 earned runs in 6 innings, but picked up the win.  It was his 241st win for the Phillies (plus 6 in the postseason), and it would be his last in Phillies pinstripes. Carlton would win another 11 games over the next season and a half with four different stops along the way before ending his Hall of Fame career with 329 wins.

On This Date…

On May 27th, 1975 the Flyers won their 2nd Stanley Cup defeating the Buffalo Sabres 2-0 in game 6, winning the series 4 games to 2.  Bob Kelly scored the Cup winner, and Bill Clement added an insurance tally. Bernie Parent was named the Conn Smythe Winner for the second year in a row.

On Ths Date…

On May 5th, 2000 Flyers captain Keith Primeau scored 12:01 into the 5th overtime period (152:01) beating Penguins goaltender Ron Tugnutt with a wicked wrister to end the 3rd longest NHL playoff game ever, and the longest since the 1930s.
